Peter Williams – Director of Coaching

Peter hails from Port Elizabeth where he achieved outstanding results as a young Senior Nationals swimmer. He achieved Top 20 World Rankings as an 18 year old, albeit during South Africa's sports isolation period. He was rewarded for his efforts with a sport scholarship to the University of Nebraska – Lincoln. During his first year in the USA Peter broke the world record for 50 m Freestyle, but was unable to attend the 1988 Seoul Olympics.

Sadly, he had difficulty fulfilling his goals, as the remainder of his career was plagued by shoulder injuries. Peter did, however, achieve 4th place at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.

Peter's unique understanding of the dynamics of the sport in South Africa has led him to establish one of the most successful clubs in the country (since 1997). During a 14-year period Peter has proved what is achievable with passion, focus and commitment.

Peter's continuing drive is to select coaches to work within the Waterborn collective who are committed to superior coaching. Peter has represented South Africa and Switzerland at international senior level as a coach on numerous occasions.

Phillipe van der Leeuw – Head Coach (Brightwater Commons)

BA Hons Theology

Phillipe is passionate about life and helping people fulfill their purpose and find their true potential through life and sport. He has
achieved provincial colours in triathlon, duathlon and biathlon and national colours in triathlon and duathlon on numerous occasions since 1997. He is also an avid adventure racer and often places in
the top 3 overall at national competitions. He continues to compete at the highest level in multi-sport events around the country and internationally.

Phillipe started teaching and coaching swimming in 1999 after doing the Swim South Africa learn to swim course. He holds a BA Hons degree in theology and plans to do his masters in the near future and is currently busy doing a short course in sports ministry through the South African theological seminary.

Njabulo – Head Coach (Linden)

“I came, I saw, I floated”

Njabula has become a “real” sounding board on integration in Waterborn. He has managed to bring enthusiasm and encouragement to help build swimmers' confidence. He has also helped to develop a sense of belief in swimmers to do more and to do it properly.
He does have compassion to be forthright, yet gentle enough to help swimmers maintain perspective on their current status as well as the way forward.
Njabula's countrywide inter-cultural experience has thus far served positively in bringing new swimmers into the fold.
